To date the vineyard, which is planted mainly with Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, has produced some award winning wines, with the current release Pinot Noir receiving a silver medal in the NZ International wine awards. The vineyard also grows smaller amounts of Riesling and Viognier. Viognier is a lesser known variety that has only started to make its mark in New Zealand, and the Joseph Ryan version is already in demand.
Joe Ryan, the youngest of the seven Ryan children, lived in Ireland for some time before returning to Gladstone to begin planting the vineyard. A large portion of the wine being produced by Joseph Ryan is now sold into Ireland, a natural target market considering the Ryan family’s Irish heritage, and Joe’s connections to the country.
The Joseph Ryan range of wines can be found at most wine stores around the Wairarapa, and at Regional Wines and Glengarry’s in Wellington, as well as at select restaurants around Wellington.
