Urlar is a Gaelic word that means “The Earth” and the Thomson family’s journey from the highlands of Scotland, to the stony soils and cool climate of Gladstone, has cemented their love for all things pure and true.
In 2004 they planted the first vines at the Urlar Estate and laid the foundations for a new life, all the while continuing the traditions of the hard working and courageous people who had come before them. In 2007, winemaker and viticulturist Guy McMaster joined them. Guy, himself a New Zealander with roots in Scotland and the land, is focused on the vineyard at Urlar and shares their respect for the land, family and friendship.
At Urlar they have great respect for the land. After all it’s the foundation of their business. And it’s why they’ve chosen to take a biodynamic approach to the way they tend the land and make their wine. For them it’s about restoring balance to the earth and nature. The result is outstanding single vineyard wines that capture the purity and flavour inherent in the land. Their commitment to being a sustainable business means we’re prepared to do things differently, even when it’s a challenge. The result is beautifully clean, handcrafted wines that leave the environment, the land, and the soil in harmony.
