Matahiwi Estate
Matahiwi Estate is the result of Alastair Scott’s life long dream to own a winery. He nurtured this dream while living and working in London and Tokyo and turned it into a reality upon returning to New Zealand in the late 1990s.
Upon arriving home in New Zealand Alastair researched the viability of farmland in the Wairarapa where he had grown up as a youngster and the best areas suited to growing Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
In 2002 a fortuitous meeting between Alastair and winemaker Jane Cooper saw Jane join Matahiwi as winemaker. Jane shared the same vision and passion for the region as Alastair and they set up the new business from scratch including building a state-of-the-art winery.
The Phoenix on the Matahiwi label was chosen as part of the imagery for the winery logo as a proud symbol of the rebirth of winemaking in Masterton for the first time since prohibition, to release our new brand with wines made from the 2004 vintage.
Matahiwi Estate focuses on producing world class Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir from its Wairarapa vineyards. Matahiwi Estate has an elite range called Holly, named after the owner’s daughter. These wines strive for excellence and individuality in each variety.
